Every test the statistical test guidance knows, all at once. Answer the questions in any order and the tests that no longer fit fade out. The number beside each answer is how many tests would remain if you chose it.

Mann-Whitney U Test / two-sample Mann-Whitney U

Close

Used to compare two independent groups on an ordinal, interval, or ratio dependent variable. It compares ranks, not means: it tests whether the values in one group tend to be higher than in the other. It is read as a difference in medians only when the two distributions have the same shape. Assumes independent observations.

Check first: When the question is about the medians, the two distributions have the same shape.

Use when: The DV is ordinal, or clearly not normal in a small sample. It compares ranks, not means.

Alternative to: Unpaired/Independent t-Test. Both apply; start with it. “Use when” says when this test fits instead, and what it compares.

If its assumptions are not met, see: Median Test / Mood's Median Test for Two Samples.
